The Symptoms of Racial Trauma and How to Begin Healing Today

A few weeks ago, a white supremacist went to Buffalo; he drove three hours to do a mass shooting in a grocery store. Ten black people died, and three black people were injured because he hates us. When you’re living in a world where you can’t go to a grocery store, you can’t send your kids to school, you can’t be sleeping in your bed like Brianna Taylor,  it’s hard to feel safe. Racial Trauma 

If you are a person of color, you most likely have some racial trauma. You can either have racial trauma by experiencing racial bias and discrimination yourself, and you can also have racial trauma by witnessing racial discrimination and bias. You can experience racial trauma through seeing black people being murdered in the world both through the lens of social media and on the news nonstop. 

The symptoms of racial trauma

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Nightmares
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Breakthrough thoughts
  • Break through memories that you can’t control. 


Breakthrough thoughts and memories are a sudden shift that thrust you back into the experience of something horrible you experienced or saw someone else experience. They are more intense than memories; it seems like you’re re-experiencing the traumatic event.

Humans are not meant to experience trauma over and over and over again. Trauma affects our mental health and our physical health. Racial trauma affects mental health,

Healing racial trauma 

Healing racial trauma is possible, and there are steps you can take to heal yourself because you deserve to be free and healthy. Hearing other people’s experiences and relating our experiences is helpful. 

Talk therapy is another important tool for healing racial trauma. Some super important research shows that when you talk about your trauma, you heal mentally, emotionally, and physically faster than if you don’t. 

Natural medicine is another way to heal racial trauma. People who get sunshine create Vitamin D. Vitamin D can heal trauma by boosting their immune system; it gives them serotonin. Serotonin is good for happy, healthy, energetic, vibrant, and hopeful hormones. Another aspect of natural medicine is eating fruits and vegetables; good whole foods can help your mental health. 

Healing through meditation is another way many people find relief from racial trauma. Meditation changed my life.
